About ankle and foot pain.
Ankle sprains are the most common injury we see in court athletes, and the biggest mistake is stopping rehab when the pain fades. A sprain that never got proper balance and strength work leaves the ankle unreliable on uneven ground. Repeated giving-way episodes are not bad luck. They are unfinished rehab.
Achilles pain has a signature pattern: stiff and sore with the first steps in the morning, easing as you move, then aching again after activity. That is tendon overload, and like all tendon problems it responds to progressive loading, not rest. The tendon needs to be loaded to remodel, dosed carefully enough not to flare.
Foot pain covers a lot of ground, from the ball of the foot to the arch to the toes. The common thread is load exceeding tissue capacity: new running volume, harder court surfaces, worn shoes, or feet that never got strong after years in supportive footwear. Feet adapt when loaded progressively.

What is usually behind it.
Unfinished sprain rehab
The ankle feels okay walking but gives way on uneven ground or cutting. Balance and strength work that never happened.
Achilles tendon overload
Morning first-step stiffness that eases with movement. Training load exceeded what the tendon could handle.
Chronic instability
Repeated rolling after a previous sprain. Each episode stretches things further. Needs dedicated stability work.
Training surface and volume
New running mileage, harder courts, or more pickleball sessions than the foot and ankle were ready for.
Footwear transitions
Big changes in shoe support alter foot loading fast. Feet need time to adapt to less or more structure.
Stiff big toe or midfoot
Limited motion upstream forces the ankle and foot to compensate. Restoring motion redistributes the load.

Straight answers.
My ankle still gives way months after a sprain. Is that normal?
It is common but not something to accept. It means the rehab stopped too early. Dedicated balance and strength work fixes most chronic instability without surgery.
Should I rest my Achilles or keep moving?
Keep moving, but load it smartly. Complete rest weakens the tendon. Progressive loading, dosed so morning stiffness does not worsen, is what remodels the tendon.
Do I need orthotics?
Sometimes as a bridge, rarely as a permanent fix. Strong feet handle load better than supported feet. We build the foot up rather than propping it up forever.
When can I run again after an ankle sprain?
When single-leg balance, hopping, and strength tests look symmetrical and pain-free. Rushing back on an unstable ankle is how one sprain becomes five.
